The 24 BEST South Lake Tahoe Restaurants (Insider’s 2026 Guide)

If you’re trying to figure out the best South Lake Tahoe restaurants, look no further. Tahoe is obviously known for it’s incredible nature, but the food isn’t throwaway, ski town blandness. You’ve got incredible steak, delicious sushi, and pretty epic wine flights with equally epic lake views.

Idle Hour in South Lake Tahoe should not be missed

I just got back from a May Tahoe trip with a friend whose family has had a house in South Lake Tahoe for years and we ate our way through the area (which happens to be one of my favorite Tahoe activities).

What I’ve got now is a solid list of the best South Lake Tahoe restaurants for lake views, casual dinners, breakfast spots, sushi, cocktails, and casual dinners, all based on my own multiple Tahoe trips and recommendations from locals.

I’ve been visiting Tahoe for over a decade, but having a truly local friend with you changes everything. She knew which diner fills up by 9:30am, which bar has bingo every Saturday, and where to find beef noodle soup that will make you unreasonably happy after a long hike.

I’ve also put together a Google Map with every spot pinned so you can plan your route without losing 20 minutes of vacation time scrolling social media for restaurants.

South Lake Tahoe restaurants: your map & Quick Guide

Every spot in this guide is pinned below in a handy map for you! I built this based on my own trips and with my local friend whose family has had a house here for years. You can click on any pin for more details. Enjoy!

Running short on time? Here’s a quick guide to Lake Tahoe and other details for the perfect trip!

Best Lake Tahoe Hikes:

  • Mount Tallac is the most famous (and the hardest) and Eagle Lake is one of the easiest/still beautiful options

Best South Lake Tahoe restaurants with a view

You are at one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. You should eat somewhere with a view at least once. The good news is that not all of them are insanely expensive! The bad news is that a lot of them are (but a splurge is worth it every now and again!). These are the ones worth planning around, from afternoon wine bars to proper sunset dinners.

Idle Hour

Okay, Idle Hour is my favorite discovery from this trip and if you don’t go I will be personally offended. If you’re a first time visitor to Lake Tahoe, this is a must.

It’s a wine bar right on the water, has insanely gorgeous views, and the wine flights are $28. There are two levels, so if you walk in and it looks completely full upstairs, don’t leave. Head downstairs. Same views, same vibe, and easier to find a table.

My friends and I grabbed an outside table, ordered bruschetta, shrimp cocktail, a flatbread, and a charcuterie board, and just… sat there watching the water for an hour. It’s more wine-and-small-plates than a full dinner situation, but it’s great nonetheless.

Happy hour runs 12pm to 3pm in summer (starting in May) and also 6pm to 8pm in winter. Plan around those windows if you can and get there early to get a table. Grab an outdoor spot, get a flight, watch the waves roll in. Tahoe at its finest.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort

Edgewood is the splurge option on this list. Dinner runs about $60 a plate, which is why my dad and sister went for lunch, and I’d tell you to do the same. Same kitchen, same views, more reasonable bill.

They ordered the curry mussels and my dad liked them so much he asked the waiter for the recipe (do young people still do this?).

The resort setting is beautiful and the service is polished without being stiff. If you’re going to do one proper sit-down meal with a view, this is it. Just go at lunch if you’re trying to save money.

Riva Grill

Riva Grill is right on the water and sits in the same price range as Edgewood, around $60 a plate for dinner. It’s consistently a pick for locals for a proper lakefront dinner. Good food, great setting, and the views over the water make it worth the spend.

I think it’s worth booking for sunset. The timing is everything at a lakefront restaurant and that’ll make the price tag feel more worth it.

Best casual dinners in South Lake Tahoe

Not every night needs to be a lakefront event. These are the restaurants in South Lake Tahoe that worth your time when you just want solid food without spending a fortune. It’s what we happily did for most nights during our recent 2-week trip.

MacDuff’s Pub

This one’s a local favorite for comfort food. The kind of place regulars have a usual order and the staff probably knows their name. The staff is awesome and you can expect classic “cottage” food like Shepherds pie and fish and chips.

Burger Lounge

Solid burgers, straightforward spot. Sometimes you just want a really good burger after a long day at the lake and Burger Lounge is the answer for that. No frills, just a real solid burger.

Base Camp Pizza

This one’s popular and probably worth the fuss. It’s lively, always busy, and a local staple. Great option if you’re with a group that can’t agree on anything because pizza is the universal answer. The atmosphere is fun and casual, which makes it a natural fit for a post-hike or post-ski dinner when everyone’s tired and just wants food and a beer.

Lake Tahoe Pizza Co

Another solid pizza option, a little more low-key than Base Camp. Good for a casual night in if you’re grabbing takeout, or a sit-down dinner when you want something easy.

Bert’s Cafe

Big portions, diner energy, exactly what it sounds like. Bert’s is the any-hour option for when you’re hungry and want something filling without overthinking it. People love it for breakfast but they also have milkshakes with a mountain of whipped cream if you’re like my 34-year old boyfriend.

Best sushi in South Lake Tahoe

Sushi in a mountain town is always a bit of a gamble, but South Lake Tahoe has two spots that are legitimately worth your time. Both come recommended by people who eat here regularly.

Yugen Cuisine

Okay, this is one of my favorites insider tips. Everyone goes to the ones with the most reviews on Google, and don’t get me wrong, they’re great! But Yugen cuisine is awesome. Unbelievably fresh dish, served in a boat (or maybe if you only order a crazy amount like we do) . It’s casual but its got a lovely outdoor space and a nice indoor space. This would be a nice low-key date night.

Off the Hook

The top sushi pick in town. They have a happy hour Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 4:30 to 6pm (they’re closed Tues/Wednesday). The dynamite shrimp are a crowd favorite and they also have solid vegan options.

The Naked Fish

Hard to go wrong here. Another strong sushi option and a close second to Off the Hook. There will probably be a wait so go early if you can, but it’s worth it.

Best breakfast in South Lake Tahoe

I am a diner person through and through. If a town has a good one, I will find it. South Lake Tahoe has a couple worth waking up early for.

Red Hut Waffle Shop

Red Hut has been around since 1959 and I frickin love it. It’s small, they’re known for waffles, it’s just so cute. Most importantly: use the pin on my map, not the first result that comes up on Google! There are a couple of locations and you must go to the original.

Order the waffles (obviously) and something with hashbrowns or with sausage gravy. That combo will set you up for a full day on the trails and you will not be thinking about food again until at least 2pm. Get a cup of coffee, take your time, and enjoy.

This is the place you go before a big hike day. Get there early (like before 9) on weekends or you’ll be waiting outside.

Getaway Cafe

This one’s a little outside Tahoe in Meyers, which is nice for getting a little more local. It’s good for a slightly later, more leisurely morning when you’re not in a rush to get out the door.

Bert’s Cafe

Not just for dinner! Bert’s serves breakfast and lunch all day, and the portions are generous enough that it earns a spot in both sections. Big portions, diner energy, no frills. It’s a local institution.

Best coffee shops in South Lake Tahoe

I tried four coffee shops on this trip and the coffee was great across all of them, so it’s really about the vibe you’re looking for, and whether you’re trying to stay and do work or just head on your way with coffee.

Keys Cafe

This was my personal favorite of the four! Tiny, incredibly local, and the baristas are some of the friendliest I’ve encountered anywhere. They were immediately friendly, and down to chat about music, which is my kind of coffee shop energy. Great wifi if you need to get some work done. I will 100% be back.

Drink Coffee Do Stuff

Winning points for the name alone, honestly. Beyond that: great wifi, a pretty front patio with a firepit, and a gorgeous backyard with picnic tables and a friendly dog wandering around. The bagel didn’t blow me away, but the coffee was excellent and the outdoor space is really lovely. This is the one to go to when you want to sit outside for a while.

Cuppa Tahoe

Hand holding a to-go coffee cup overlooking a marina with docks and sailboats in South Lake Tahoe

This was my group’s favorite. Cute space, really good coffee, and they serve their to-go orders in recyclable containers that look like takeout boxes. They do charge you to keep coworking after about an hour, which I’m not thrilled about (I’m ordering drinks, food, and tipping well while I’m there!). But if you’re just popping in for coffee, it’s a great spot.

3 Pines Coffee

Good coffee, pretty spacious, and they have board games which is a fun touch. No wifi though, so don’t show up expecting to work. More of a “unplug and hang out” vibe than a laptop spot, which is either perfect or not what you need depending on your morning.

Best dinner pubs in South Lake Tahoe

These are your bar meets restaurant kind of places. They’re not like, nightlife bars, but you can also just grab a beer or cocktail and chill if you want.

Himmel Haus

A German beer hall in South Lake Tahoe is not something I knew I needed until I walked in. Himmel Haus is the real deal. They’ve got proper bratwurst, big steins of beer, communal tables, and a menu that’s pretty fun.

They have duck brat and bison brat options (I love duck and bison- it’s the Colorado girl in me). This is a pretty popular bachelor party spot as well – it’s good for big groups and just a fun time.

It gets lively in a really fun way once the evening gets going. If you’re with four or more people trying to figure out where to go for dinner, just go here.

Tahoe Cocktail Corner

Voted “Best Cocktails” in the Best of Tahoe awards, and they hold up (I had some sort of burnt rosemary cocktail that was awesome). It’s got a good indoor and outdoor space and is right next to a brewery as well.

They also have live music and we happened to be there on a night the performer spanks anyone celebrating a birthday. The night I was there, four separate people got up for it. Four. The energy is chaotic and fun and very specifically Tahoe bar energy. You’ll either love it or be absolutely baffled by it (both are valid).

Coldwater Brewery and Grill

Nice spot, good burgers, large portions. On the pricier side for what it is (resort-town markup is real), but the beer selection is solid if you’re into craft beer. Worth knowing about, just set your expectations on the price-to-vibe ratio going in.

Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger

Open 24 hours. That’s basically the whole review. If it’s 1am and you need food, Lucky Beaver exists for exactly this reason. Good burgers, no frills, does the job. Note it’s just over the Nevada border in Stateline, so plug the address into your maps rather than walking.

Best takeout and international food in South Lake Tahoe

This is the part of the South Lake Tahoe food scene that most visitors completely miss, which is a shame because these are some of the best meals you can have. Are they super fancy? No. Are they delicious? Yes.

Dumpling 85

Table spread of spicy noodle soup, lo mein, edamame, and fried rice at an Asian restaurant in South Lake Tahoe
Dumplings 85 fulfilling my soup dreams

I love anywhere that has good soup dumplings. You should also go for the beef noodle soup. I am a soup person (like, deeply, embarrassingly a soup person) and this one made me very happy. Warm, rich, exactly what you want after a day on the trails.

Curry N Grill

Solid Indian takeout and the tikka masala is really good. Ask about the curry and grill combo special when you order. If you’re in a vacation rental and want something excellent without cooking, this is the answer. My local friend orders from here pretty much every trip.

My Thai

Solid Thai takeout. We liked the pad thai and the green curry specifically. You can eat in or pick it up after a hike or beach day like we did.

FAQs about South Lake Tahoe restaurants

What is the best restaurant in South Lake Tahoe?

For a special occasion with views, Edgewood Tahoe Resort. The food is excellent (get the curry mussels), and going at lunch instead of dinner can save you a lot. For a proper sunset dinner on the water, Riva Grill is the pick. For the best value with a lake view, Idle Hour’s afternoon wine flights are my top pick.

What is the best breakfast spot in South Lake Tahoe?

Red Hut Waffle Shop hands-down, no question. Been around since 1959, tiny, perfect diner energy. But you MUST go to the original (it’s on my map), not whatever Google surfaces first. There are multiple locations and the original is the one you want. Get the waffles and something with sausage gravy. Get there before 9am on weekends.

Where should I eat in South Lake Tahoe with a view of the lake?

Idle Hour for a relaxed afternoon wine and small plates right on the water. Riva Grill for a proper lakefront dinner at sunset. Edgewood Tahoe for the most polished setting of the three. If you have a few days, honestly try all three at different times of day.

Is food expensive in South Lake Tahoe?

It varies a lot so you have options across price ranges. The takeout spots (Curry N Grill, Dumpling 85, My Thai) are very affordable. Mid-range bars and casual spots like Himmel Haus and Tahoe Cocktail Corner are reasonable. Edgewood at dinner runs about $60 a plate. The resort-town markup is real at some spots but you can eat really well without spending a lot if you know where to go.

What’s the best coffee shop in South Lake Tahoe?

Depends on what vibe you’re looking for. Keys Cafe is my personal favorite for the friendly local feel and great wifi. Drink Coffee Do Stuff has the best outdoor space (firepit patio, backyard, friendly dog).

What’s a good spot for a group dinner in South Lake Tahoe?

Himmel Haus! Communal tables, big steins of beer, bratwurst in fun varieties (bison, duck, and the classics), and a lively atmosphere that gets better as the night goes on. Works for groups of four to ten people who want a fun dinner.

Final thoughts on where to eat in South Lake Tahoe

The best South Lake Tahoe restaurants aren’t all on the water or in the guidebooks. Some of them are a bowl of beef noodle soup at a no-frills spot that you almost walked past. Some are a wine flight at 4pm while the lake goes pink behind you. Some are a bison bratwurst in a German beer hall.

That’s what I love about having a local show you around. You stop eating at the obvious places and start eating at the good ones.

Enjoy your trip. Go to Idle Hour. Get the mussels at Edgewood. And if someone at Tahoe Cocktail Corner tells you it’s their birthday, just know what you’re walking into. 🙂

Cheers to your next adventure 🏔️🍷
